Prague, the only European city to escape the bombs of the last century's wars, is one of Europe's best preserved cities. It is filled with sumptuous architecture and friendly people.

Our drive to Prague took us through rolling farmland and charming villages and we skirted České Budějovice, home of the original Budweiser beer.

Prague is a thousand year old city of 1.2 million people situated on the Vltava river and its surrounding hills. Czechs are proud of their famous sons which include Hus, Kepler, Hasek and Kafka.

The Tyn Church anchors one side of the old town square. Around the square the architectural styles of Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, rococo and Art Nouveau are all visible.

The Charles Bridge, built in 1357 crosses the Vltava River and links Old Town with the Little Quarter and Prague Castle area.  Statues of saints and heroes line each side.

The Slavin Cemetery, beside the St. Peter and Paul Church in the Vysegrad area is the final resting place of many famous Czechs including the composers Dvorak and Smetana.

In the Jewish Quarter, there are numerous reminders of the large Jewish community that once lived in Prague, most of whom were killed in the Holocaust at Theresienstadt. Today the synagogues are moving tributes to the people and cultural heritage that were lost. The  Old Jewish Cemetery is thought to contain the remains of 12,000 people.
