Czech 2

Our trip  to the Czech Republic started by driving our rental car, ( a standard transmission was all we were permitted to take into the Czech Republic), from Munich to Freistadt, Austria via Linz. The highway from Munich to Linz is modern and a joy to drive - I only stalled the standard 3 times!!

The charming medieval town of Freistadt, Austria lies near the Czech border. We preferred to stay on this side of the border due to rumours of rampant car thefts.

Outside Freistadt's ancient walls lie sculptured gardens.

Cesky Krumlov, also called Krummau, is a charming medieval city on the river Vltava in the Bohemian area. Its 75 % German speaking population was expelled during and after World War II.

Along the cobbled streets of the Latran area of Cesky Krumlov are shops selling wooden crafts, marionettes, wrought iron decorations, lace and glassware.

The castle of Cesky Krumlov is the second largest in Bohemia. The Castle complex, containing 40 buildings took 6 centuries to complete. The tower in the rear is the Mansion Tower of the Castle.  The tower in front is St. Joducus Church, built in the 1400s.

The Plastovy Bridge links the Castle to Mansion Gardens of the Castle, a beautiful park of groomed gardens and fountains. Views from here are amazing.
