Germany 4

Our drive through Eastern Germany took us through both charming timbered villages and dreary run-down post-communist industrial towns. Wittenberg and Potsdam typified the renewal of cultural icons.

Die Schlosskirche (Castle Church) in Wittenberg/ Lutherstadt is the centerpiece of a number of sites associated with the Protestant Reformation, including the Wittenberg University and the homes of Luther and Melanchthon.

The posting of Luther's 95 theses in 1517 on the door of this church  marked the beginning of the Protestant Reformation.

The 15th Century Stadtkirche towers over the central Market Square of Wittenberg.

Potsdam is the capital city of Brandenburg, situated on the Havel river, southwest of Berlin. It is well known for its historical sites, especially the parks and castles of Sanssouci, a World Heritage site.

The Oriental Teahouse in the gardens of Sansoucci reflect the popular style of the 1750's, Chinoiserie, a mixture of ornamental rococo elements and parts of Oriental architecture.

Our drive into central Berlin from Potsdam took us past parks, lakes, and charming residential areas - which were part of the former West Berlin.
