Tuscany is dotted with farmhouses, villas and baronial castles. Romanesque churches and abbeys lining the roadways and hill-top fortified towns and monasteries attest the the rich history of the region.

The distinctive skyline of San Gimignano is unchanged from medieval times, when the town lay on the main pilgrim route from northern Europe to Rome.

The Palazzo Vecchio del Podesta on the Piazza del Duomo dates from 1239 and is believed to have the town's oldest tower. 14 of the town's original 76 towers have survived.

San Gimignano is rich in works of art, frescoed churches and shops selling fine wines, jewellery and ceramics.

The Eastern Tuscany region is renowned for its beech and oak forests, its mountain pastures and its ancient  towns and cities which have been largely rebuilt since World War II.

Arezzo is famous as the home of artist and architect Vasari (his 1540 home is on this street)  as well as fresco artist Piero della Francesca whose work is found in the Duomo and the 13th century church of San Francesco.

The ruins of a Roman amphitheatre in Arrezzo as well as the remains of the fortress Medicea Fortezza highlight the strategic location and wealth of this area.
