Spain 2

The region of Catalunya, with Barcelona as its capital, has a distinct language, history and culture which has at various times been at odds with the central Spanish government in Madrid. This is not the Spain of flamenco and bullfights!

The most popular way to see Barcelona is to use the Bus Turistic, a hop-on, hop-off service that circles through the major attractions such as the Olympic site, the Gothic Quarter, the Eixample, and the peaks of Tibidabo and Montjuic.

The harbour front includes the old port, a tree-lined esplanade, the shopping and recreation complex of Maremagnum, and the modern World Trade Centre. Nearby is the historic Roman Gothic Quarter, where the cathedral and the Picasso Museum are major attractions.

Barcelona is famous for its flowing Modernist architecture, the best known by  Antoni Gaudi (1852-1926).

Gaudi's unfinished cathedral, Sagrada Familia, is not expected to be completed for another 50 years.

La Rambla is a 2 kilometer promenade from Placa de Catalunya to the Christopher Columbus monument on the harbor. Rich with shops, kiosks, buskers and musical entertainers, it is a delight to explore.

The Maritime Museum presents the history of sailing & piracy on the Mediterranean. It is housed in the only existing secular Gothic building, a World Heritage site.
